How Should I Get My Bike Ready for Spring Riding?

If you were one of those people who plan ahead ( yes, there are some people like that), then you may have had your bike turned up last fall before you stored it away for the winter. If that were the case, then  you’ll merely have to inflate your tires to the proper pressure and you're ready to ride.

But for the vast majority of folks, we stored our bikes away last fall and really didn’t think too much about getting it ready for the spring. So, if you fit into that category, this message is for you.

Probably the best way to get your bike ready for Spring is to get a tune-up or over-haul at a professional  bike shop.  Since we’re a bit biased, we would suggest you go to SUGAR’S BIKE SHOP in Spencerport, where we will get your bike in tip-top running order.  We offer several maintenance packages and you can SAVE $$ on these maintenance packages if you come in before May 15th.

Our tune-ups include a thorough check of your entire bike. We will check and adjust the

bearings on your wheels, your headset, and bottom bracket. We’ll adjust your brakes and shifters, make sure all the nuts and bolts are tight and secure and lubricate the various moving parts on your bike. We’ll check the wheels for trueness and tighten the spokes if necessary. We’ll clean the frame and fork and then inflate the tires to the proper pressure. You’re bike will ride and respond almost like new.

If it’s been some time since you’ve had any work done on your bike, you may want to consider a complete over-haul. We’ll take your bike completely apart, clean and repack all of the bearings, thoroughly clean and wax the frame and fork, true the wheels and then put the bike back together again. This service should be performed every 3-4 years with average riding, so if you haven’t had this service performed on your bike in a few years, you may want to consider it now.

Either of these services will get your bike in good running condition so you can spend more time riding and enjoying your bike.

We might also suggest you consider TUBE GUARDS for your tires. Tube Guards are a man-made product using advanced micro-shell technology, which looks a lot  like plastic,  but is much stronger. These plastic strips fit between your tire and tube and provide added protection from thorns, rim cuts, glass and road debris. Tube Guards will help  prevent those unwanted flat tires.  We can install TUBE GUARDS in your tires while it’s in for maintenance, and if you mention that you saw this advertisement on our web site we’ll install them LABOR FREE! You pay only the cost of the Tube Guards.   NOW THAT’S A DEAL TOO GOOD TO PASS UP!!

Keeping Your Bike Clean

Many of our customers ask us how to best clean their bikes. (It appears that many riders seldom, if ever clean their bikes, based on our observation in the service department) Some people have told us they use the garden hose to wash down the bike, and some have even resorted to a high-pressure type system. Although these methods probably get much of the dirt, grim and grease off the bike, they are not generally recommended.

Using a garden hose or any high-pressure device has the potential of forcing the grease out of the bearing races and bearings, thus leaving your bearings not lubricated. We recommend instead using a hand spray bottle with a good quality detergent solution, similar to that which you would use on your car. Spray the bike frame, wheels, etc. and then wipe off with a clean rag. Do this as often as is necessary to get all the dirt and grim off.

There are a couple great commercial products available which can aid you in this chore. One is “Bike Wash” which is great for cleaning the frame and wheels. The other is “Simple Green” which is very effective on your chain and other parts that may be covered with grease or oil.

Once your bike is clean, don’t forget to put a coat of protective wax on the frame, re-lubricate the chain, derailleurs and springs on the brake arches….and you’re ready for some more fantastic riding.
